Alexandria Cardinals

(Alexandria, MN) -- The September 18th edition of the Cardinal Sports Report notes that the Cardinal Girls' Tennis and Girls' Soccer teams suffered defeats Tuesday evening for the first time since August.

In a key Central Lakes Conference Girls' Tennis match, Brainerd hosted Alexandria Tuesday and halted the Cards' eight-match win streak. The Warriors prevailed by a 5-2 score. Coach Dave Ronning comments below that this was a hard-fought, tightly contested match.

Tuesday's outcome leaves Alexandria with a 9-5 overall record, with a 5-1 mark in the CLC.

Spuds turn back Cardinals on soccer pitches: Alexandria's undefeated streak in Girls' Soccer stopped at seven Tuesday evening. Moorhead tallied three goals in the first 40 minutes, and parlayed that outburst into a 3-1 victory inside Jim Gotta Stadium at Moorhead High School last night. The Cards had yielded just one goal in the previous seven matches, and that was on a set piece (not during the run of play). Alexandria returns to Viking Bank Field to host Brainerd Thursday evening, in a KXRA Radio broadcast. The Cardinal Boys' Soccer team will travel to Brainerd tomorrow night, for a 7 p.m. Varsity match with the Warriors. The Cards aim to bounce back following a 7-0 reversal at home to Moorhead. The Spuds' team speed up front was displayed Tuesday evening, led by junior forward Yousif Alshihmani. He netted a hat trick, scoring in the 21st, 31st, and 55th minutes. The loss last night dropped the Cardinals to 5-4-1 on the season.

Close, but....: Alexandria Area High School's Pohlig Court was the site for a marathon Volleyball match last night. The host Cardinals pushed the four-time defending Section 8AAA Champions to the distance before Moorhead prevailed in the decisive fifth set. Assistant Coach Mackenzie Dougherty has a synopsis in the audio player below.

The Cardinals will host Brainerd in a CLC match at Alexandria Area High School tomorrow evening. That is the only scheduled match between the conference rivals during the 2019 regular season.
