(Alexandria, MN) -- Thursday's edition of the Cardinal Sports Report notes the event schedule for the day, highlighted by the start of the post-season for the Alexandria Cardinal Girls' Tennis team.

The team portion of the North Sub-Section 8AA Girls' Tennis Tournament is taking place throughout the day today (Thursday) at the Choice Health and Fitness indoor tennis facility in Grand Forks. The Cardinals will face Fergus Falls at 10:00 this morning, with the winner of that match staying around to face either Bemidji or Little Falls in the second round of play. The winner of the first round match between Moorhead and Detroit Lakes will play top-seeded Brainerd in the second round of the North Sub-Section 8AA Team Tournament.

Elimination matches will be scheduled until just two teams remain to come out of the north for next weekend's Section 8AA Girls' Tennis Tournament.

Alexandria is seeded third, behind Brainerd and Bemidji in the North Sub-Section 8AA Team Tennis Tournament. Seeding of the seven teams is noted below:

  1. Brainerd
  2. Bemidji
  3. Alexandria
  4. Moorhead
  5. Detroit Lakes
  6. Fergus Falls
  7. Little Falls

Having a first round bye in the North Sub-Section 8AA Girls' Tennis Team Tournament, Brainerd needs only one win today to move into the Section 8AA Team Tournament next weekend, which will include two representatives from the North Sub-Section and two from the South Sub-Section. Any of the other six teams will need two victories in Grand Forks today to advance to be among the last four teams in Section 8AA competition next weekend at StaFit in Sartell. Best wishes to the Cardinals in the Sub-Section Tournament!

Individual matches in the North Sub-Section 8AA Girls' Tennis Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday in Grand Forks. Four singles players and four doubles teams will advance out of the North Sub-Section to compete at Sartell next weekend, in the Section 8AA Girls' Tennis Individual Tournament.
