(Alexandria, MN) -- Thursday's Cardinal Sports Report details post-season action ahead today for athletes from three teams.

Day one of the two-day Section 8AA Cross Country Running Championships is set for today (Thursday) in Bemidji. The championship event has been spread out over two days due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Adjusted guidelines by the Minnesota Department of Health, the Department of Education, and the Minnesota State High School League note that fewer than 30 runners can toe the line at the start of each heat of a race, in an attempt to prevent congregation among athletes. Close congregation of people is a chief factor in the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19. For today's Section 8AA Boys' Cross Country Meet, the competition will be spread out over a number of heats. Each team may enter 6-7 runners for Sections. The Section 8AA Girls' Cross Country Meet is scheduled for tomorrow in Bemidji.

Alexandria's Girls' Soccer team returns to the pitch tonight, facing Detroit Lakes in the quarterfinal round of the Section 8A Tournament. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00. The Cardinals are presently 7-1-3 on the season, following a 10-0 win against Pelican Rapids Tuesday night. The Lakers downed Fergus Falls on Tuesday, 2-1 to raise the 2020 record to 9-1-1. The winner will face either East Grand Forks or Bemidji in the semifinal round of Section play next Tuesday.

The Cardinal Boys' Soccer team will try to go 2-for-2 in the Section 8A Tournament this afternoon. But they will have to topple the top seed in the North Sub-Section. Pelican Rapids is 8-2 following a 10-1 win against Hillcrest Lutheran Academy on Monday. The Vikings will host the Cardinals, who earned a 4-0 victory at Detroit Lakes three days ago. Captain Jacob Partington indicates that the team has been making good progress, in anticipation of the Section 8A Tournament.

He scored a goal in the Cardinals' win against Pelican Rapids in the 2019 Section 8A Tournament. The Cards edged the Vikings last fall, 3-2 in the quarterfinal round in Section play. KXRA Sports Director Dave McClurg will describe the Cards' match in Pelican Rapids today. The pre-game coverage, presented by Juettner Motors of Alexandria, will be on the air at 3:40....20 minutes prior to the match.

KXRA Radio will air a number of upcoming Alexandria Cardinal events as part of our play-by-play coverage (weather, health and safety, and travel conditions permitting). Listen at 1490 AM, 100.3 or 105.7 FM, or stream online, through the new VoiceOfAlexandria app, presented by Glenwood State Bank:
