(Alexandria, MN) -- Friday's Cardinal Sports Report includes details on how Alexandria secured a Girls' Basketball victory at Brainerd High School for the first time in three seasons.

At Brainerd High School Thursday night, the Alexandria Girls' Basketball team prevailed over the Warriors, 56-52. Both teams were successful on offensive execution in the opening half. Ella Grove scored nine first half points, while Taya Hoelscher netted eight in the game's first 18 minutes. The host Warriors were on fire beyond the arc in the opening half, knocking down six of eight three-point shots, as Alexandria led at the break, 29-28. The Lady Cards tightened up on defense after intermission, holding Brainerd to just seven points in the first 11 minutes after halftime while building a nine point lead. Key free throw conversions late by junior guard Jaya Hatlestad help to fend off a Brainerd rally, as Alexandria secured the four-point win.

Senior Mia McGrane joined D-Mac during the KXRA Radio post-game show from Brainerd High School. She interjected what she was able to do in the second half to slow down Warrior guard Erika Lane, who nailed all of her three-point shots as part of a 14-point performance in the first half.

McGrane led the Cardinals in scoring with 14 points, Grove added 13, and Hoelscher scored 12 for the Lady Cards, who completed the season sweep of the Warriors. Alexandria is now 11-3 in the Central Lakes Conference, 18-7 overall. Brainerd had a five-game win streak snapped, as the Warriors fell to 12-11 overall.

The Cardinal Boys' Basketball squad suffered a 77-67 defeat to the Spuds at Moorhead High School last night. Sophomores Erik Hedstrom and Kristen Hoskins led the Cards in scoring with 19 and 15 points, respectively. Fergus Falls will host Alexandria this evening, in a game that has Central Lakes Conference title implications. KXRA Radio will have broadcast coverage, beginning around 7 p.m.

Best wishes to the three Alexandria Nordic Ski racers competing at State today! Senior Bethany Miller, plus juniors Kaisa Bosek and Emma Reineke will all represent the Cardinals in the Minnesota State High School League's Nordic Ski Racing Championships today (Friday). The meet was moved back one day from Thursday, due to the extreme cold. Again this year, the State Championships are taking place at Giants Ridge near Biwabik.
