(Alexandria, MN) -- Friday's Cardinal Sports Report includes the final segment of the periodic "Great Games" series, spotlighting the Alexandria Cardinal Girls' Basketball team.
The final of the nine segments of our periodic "Great Games" series celebrates one of the KXRA Radio broadcasts involving the Alexandria Cardinal Girls' Basketball team. The contest was played at the Ralph Anderson Gymnasium inside Detroit Lakes High School, as the Lady Cards faced Bemidji on Thursday, March 5th. The May 22nd Cardinal Sports Report podcast is included in the audio player below. Access that to hear audio clips of the Section 8AAA Championship Game broadcast from March 5th, with KXRA commentary provided by Bob Cunniff and Sports Director Dave McClurg.
Notable audio from the game broadcast from the Section 8AAA Championship Game:
- How a key first half scoring spurt started and ended for the Lady Cards which allowed Alexandria to establish a 24-8 lead that Bemidji would not completely recover from
- Key second half baskets by senior Captain Mia McGrane and her blocked shot which quelled Bemidji's momentum, after the Jacks closed to within six points with under four minutes left
- The closing seconds of the match-up, including a reappearance late by senior Captain Ella Grove after she sat on the bench for a sizeable portion of the second half with a slight ankle-related issue
Alexandria clinched its third Section 8AAA title in four seasons with the 63-51 win over Bemidji. The Lady Cards would follow that up by going 1-1 the following week at the 2020 State Tournament. The resume would be punctuated with a 68-56 win over Red Wing in the consolation round of Class AAA on March 12th....the last day of prep competition in Minnesota before the COVID-19 pandemic brought the sports world to a screeching halt. The Lady Cards' final record for the year was 23-8. Grove, McGrane, and Summer Gerhardt were the three members of the team representing the Class of 2020 at Alexandria Area High School.
The radio broadcasts of the Alexandria Cardinal Sports Reports on KXRA, KX92, and Z99.3 will return once high school sports competition resumes in Minnesota.
Wings UP!!!! Congratulations to all members in the Class of 2020! Stay safe, and be well.
