(Alexandria, MN) -- The Friday edition of the Cardinal Sports Report includes post-match reaction following Alexandria's Thursday night victory over Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in the Section 8A Boys' Soccer Tournament.
Thursday evening, KXRA Radio covered the Alexandria Boys' Soccer match at home, when the Cardinals faced Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in the third round of the Section 8A Tournament. The visiting Comets struck quickly, scoring in the second minute, before the Cardinals countered to create a 2-2 deadlock at the break. Then, four Alexandria goals in the first 25 minutes of the second half propelled the Cards to a 6-3 win. That advanced the Cardinals into the fourth round of the Section 8A Tournament, which will consist of a total of four quarterfinal matches (two in each Sub-Section). Senior Captain Joshua Kietzmann was honored as the Quality Toyota/Quality Cardinal Athlete of the match. He scored in each half and was one of five players to find the back of the net in the Cardinals' match last night. Hear some of his remarks in the audio player below.
Joshua Kietzmann's coach, Brandon Johnson, described the explosive second half for the Cardinals offensively, while also offering some statistics on possession time and how much activity his sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Meuwissen received during last night's match.
The win Thursday night allows the Alexandria Cardinals are slated to face Pelican Rapids in a 1 p.m. match on Saturday. That will be a quarterfinal match in the Section 8A Tournament. As of 11:00 Friday morning, the site for the game is to be determined. Due to the mixed precipitation falling in western Minnesota, the conclusion made is that the Cardinals' match Saturday will not be played in Pelican Rapids. Updated information will be posted here as it becomes available.
In Section 8A Girls' Soccer last night, Bemidji blanked Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, 8-0 in the third round. The win will send the Lumberjacks to Alexandria for a quarterfinal match in the Section 8A Tournament. The contest will air on KXRA Radio and online, at VoiceOfAlexandria.com.
Alexandria's Girls' Swimming and Diving team hosted ROCORI in the final dual meet during the fall season at Discovery Middle School. The meet was tight and not decided until the final event of the night. Listen to the synopsis below from Coach Crysta Krause.
The True Team Section 6A Meet is slated to be held at the Discovery Middle School pool tomorrow, weather and travel conditions permitting.
As the Cardinal Football squad gets ready for a trip to Sartell for the Week 7 match-up, KXRA Sports Director Dave McClurg spoke with two teammates that were honored last Friday as the Quality Toyota/Quality Cardinal Athletes of the game. Senior linebacker Matthew Zick was on the field for the large majority of the 86 plays run by the Tech offense last week. The Cardinal defensive player from last Friday's victory comments below about what it was like to defend an opposing team's offense that wanted to push the tempo.
Matthew Zick's teammate, Kade Blankenship was honored for his efforts on offense. Not only was he on the receiving end of one of the scoring passes thrown by quarterback Matthew Carlsen, he excelled in his role as a downfield blocker, which was a contributing factor for teammate Nolan Morical rushing for more than 300 yards in last Friday's game. Kade Blankenship is fully aware that the Sartell Sabres are an opponent that deserves respect, despite the 0-6 record.
Bob Cunniff will join D-Mac for the Cardinal Football broadcast tonight on KXRA (1490 AM/100.3 and 105.7 FM). Audio of the game from Sartell will also be available online, at www.voiceofalexandria.com.
Best wishes on Saturday to Brianna Holm! She will represent the Alexandria Cardinal Girls' Tennis team in the Section 8AA Individual Tournament tomorrow at the indoor tennis facility at StaFit in Sartell. Team competition in that tournament is taking place today.
