(Alexandria, MN) -- Thursday's Cardinal Sports Report includes notes from the regular season football finale for the Alexandria Cardinals, along with more information from Tuesday's Central Lakes Conference Championship Meet.

Wednesday night features dozens of prep gridiron matchups across the state, in advance of the MEA weekend. The Alexandria Cardinal Football squad held senior starting quarterback Matthew Carlsen out of the lineup as a precautionary measure, to ensure that he is fully healthy for the start of the Section 8AAAAA Tournament. With sophomore Carter Steffensmeier taking the snaps, the Cardinal offense got into the end zone two times. Steffensmeier threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to running back Nolan Morical on Alexandria's first series of the game. Morical would later add an 8-yard rushing touchdown in the third period. However, Sauk Rapids-Rice senior quarterback Kobe Lee threw for a score and rushed for two more in the Storm's 26-21 victory. The win snapped a five-game losing skid for Sauk Rapids-Rice.

In spite of consecutive defeats to close out the regular season, Alexandria gained the second seed ahead of Moorhead in the Section 8AAAAA Tournament. In spite of having a lower QRF number than Moorhead after the Week 8 results were entered into the formula (Moorhead possessing a QRF score of 89.1, compared to Alexandria's 83.7), the comparative QRF scores between the Cardinals and the Spuds fell into the tiebreaker margin, where a set of tiebreakers would be used to determine the higher seed. The first point in the tiebreaker comparison is to note the head-to-head record against the two teams, if they played each other in the regular season. With Alexandria's Week 2 victory at Moorhead, the Cardinals moved ahead of Moorhead to secure the second seed for the Section 8AAAAA Tournament. The Cards will host a Section 8AAAAA Semifinal game at Viking Bank Field in Alexandria on Saturday, October 26th.

Alexandria's Boys' Cross Country team placed third during Tuesday's Central Lakes Conference Championships at Arrowwood Resort. Coach Travis Hochhalter has a detailed summary below.

The Alexandria Cardinal Girls' Cross Country summary was included as part of the Wednesday Cardinal Sports Report, accessible on VoiceOfAlexandria.com when you visit the Cardinal Sports page.
