(Alexandria, MN) -- Tuesday's edition of the Cardinal Sports Report includes an update on how Alexandria secured its second straight win in the Section 8A Boys' Soccer Tournament, plus offers the dramatic conclusion of the Section 8A Girls' Soccer playoff, when the Cardinals hosted Bemidji in Alexandria.

As fate would have it, the Alexandria Cardinal Girls' Soccer season ended with PK shootout loss for a second consecutive year. The two-time defending Section 8A Champions from Bemidji scored in the second minute of Monday's match, but with less than a minute to go in the opening half, junior Emma Reineke tied the score to leave the match at 1-1. No further scoring would take place during the run of play (40 minutes of the second half, plus two 10-minute overtime sessions). So a penalty kick shootout would determine which team would advance. Bemidji won the coin toss, to have the chance to defend first in PK's. The Lumberjacks and the Cardinals would convert on three of the first four penalty kicks, to leave the shootout even into the fifth round. Bemidji goalkeeper Abby Kieson exerted her influence in what would turn out to be the last round. The shooters in the fifth round were Alexandria's Anna Zwilling and Bemidji's Lindsey Hildenbrand. KXRA Audio of the final round of the penalty kick shootout, with D-Mac and Wes Thompson on the call, is contained below.

With Bemidji's victory in penalty kicks, the Lumberjacks will travel west on U.S. Highway 2 to East Grand Forks for the North Sub-Section 8A Championship match, set to begin at 6 p.m. this evening (Tuesday) in East Grand Forks.

The Alexandria Cardinal Boys' Soccer team played in Fergus Falls last night, seeking to advance in the Section 8A Tournament. The North Sub-Section's third seed faced the second-seeded Pelican Rapids Vikings, with the match being contested at Otter Stadium in Fergus Falls due to the conditions on the natural grass field at Pelican Rapids. The game was decided in regulation play, with the Cards dealing the Vikings a season-ending loss. Coach Brandon Johnson explains below.

The victory sends the Cardinals into the North Sub-Section 8A Championship Match at Bemidji tonight. The top-seeded Lumberjacks overwhelmed East Grand Forks last night in Bemidji, 10-0. KXRA will have the coverage from Bemidji State University this evening. On the radio dial, access the broadcast on 1490 AM, 100.3 FM, or 105.7 FM in the west-central part of the state, or online, at www.voiceofalexandria.com.
