Randy Roers squares up a pitch in Union Hill

Randy Roers squares up a pitch in Union Hill on Saturday, August 17th.  He hit a double to start an early rally for Alexandria.  On deck Jerrod Kelley managed to knock out two hits in the game for the Classic Clippers.

(Union Hill, MN) Alexandria Right-Hander Erik Waage and reliever Randy Roers combined to throw a one hit game against Prior Lake in the opener of the Class AA Senior Men's State Tournament in Union Hill.  Offensively Alexandria got on the board in second inning and never trailed afterward.  Roers led off the inning with a double to left-center and scored on a single by Jerrod Kelley.  Kelley and Jeff Kuhn were both involved in the scoring in the fourth inning.  Both Alexandria batters scored after getting on base thanks to getting hit by a pitch. Three other batters were walked that inning. In total Alexandria did manage seven hits in the game against the mariners two left-handed pitchers.  Prior Lake's only hit and run of the game came in the fifth inning following a lead-off double, a fielder's choice and an error.  The final score was 3-1 Alexandria.  Kelley led with two hits, followed by Roers, Joe Korkowski, Kurtis Kuhn, Doug Breitkreutz, and Jeff Kuhn with one hit a piece.

On Sunday the Classic Clippers squared off with the top seeded Minnetonka Lakers.  This game was played in Belle Plaine.  Mike Forester has only had a few starts on the hill this year, but got a chance to face the Lakers.  In the top of the first, Alexandria struck first with a walk by Kurtis Kuhn, a sacrifice bunt by Korkowski and a solid base hit by Roers.  Breitkreutz and Jeff Hook also hit singles in the inning, combining to bring Roers in.  Minnetonka struck back in the bottom of the first.  After a hit batsman and a walk, the Laker's Scott Glenn hit a double that landed just in fair territory at the fence in right field; scoring two runs.  He was moved over to third on a sacrifice and scored on a base hit.  With the score 3-2 it was the Minnetonka defense that showed up.  Alexandria started the second inning with a base hit by Jesse Flaten.  Jeff Kuhn hit a scalding linedrive to the third baseman, who doubled off Flaten.  Kurtis Kuhn got a base hit, but was forced out on a ball up the middle by Korkowski that was backhanded by the second baseman and relayed to second just ahead of Kuhn's slide.

The Lakers came back with another run in the third inning with a hit; eventually scoring on a SAC fly making the score 4-2.

Alexandria managed to plate one more run; this in the top of the fourth.  James Olson started the inning with a base hit.  He was moved around on hits by Jeff and Kurtis Kuhn.  It was now 4-3 with three frames to play.

Things somewhat unraveled for Alexandria in the bottom of the fourth.  Following two walks, an error on an infield pop fly and a collision on a throw to first base the Lakers eventually scored another run following yet another unfortunate event.  A light linedrive was hit to shortstop but fell just out of the reach of Breitkreutz.  In an attempt to get the runner at second base, he attempted a toss to second while sprawled out on the ground.  Off slightly, the throw drew second baseman Jerrod Kelley into the path of the sliding runner who spike him in the hand.  Kelley left the game with a severe gash to his left hand requiring 25 stiches.  Remarkably only one runner scored.  A highlight of the inning was a throw to first base by catcher Kurtis Kuhn, picking off a runner.

Brietkreutz came it to finish the game on the mound. With the exception of one hit batsman, he was able to keep the bases clean in the fifth and sixth innings.  Alexandria threatening only slightly with a hit in both the five and sixth innings.

For the game Alexandria had 11 hits to the Laker's 4.  Jeff Hook and Kurtis Kuhn each had two hits.  Also hitting safely were Korkowski, Roers, Kelley, Breitkruetz, Olson, Flaten and Jeff Kuhn.

Alexandria now plays Sebeka-Menahga on Saturday, August 24th at 2:30 (in Jordan).
