(Elk River, MN)  --  Police in Elk River are alerting residents about a cougar sighting in the community.  Officers say a home security camera near the Mississippi River caught images of the large cat.  Conservation officers were notified and are reminding people to be aware of their surroundings.  The D-N-R says cougar sightings are rare and should be reported right away.  Authorities in southeastern Minnesota confirmed a cougar sighting last week in Dodge Center.  It is illegal to shoot a cougar because they are a protected species.
