Northstar Behavioral Health Expands to Fergus Falls to Combat Substance Use Disorders/Behavioral Health Concerns

(Fergus Falls, MN) -- Northstar Behavioral Health (NBH) has announced a formal commitment to bring its addiction recovery services to Fergus Falls, Minnesota. When the 60-bed facility opens in early 2020 after extensive renovations on a previously vacant building, it will revolutionize Fergus Falls’ ability to respond to the substance abuse crisis in greater Minnesota.

“This facility for chemical dependency and mental health treatment is critically needed in our community,” said Ben Schierer, mayor of Fergus Falls. “We thank the county for working so hard to get this building filled and we thank Northstar Behavioral Health for coming to Fergus Falls.”

NBH works to provide hope, improve the quality of life, and preserve families affected by opioid addiction. Over the last four years, NBH has created, implemented, and refined an unprecedented continuum of care and is looking forward to its first expansion outside of the Twin Cities area.

“NBH wants to thank the city of Fergus Falls and the county of Otter Tail for their commitment and dedication to help support those battling substance use disorder,” said Luke Wendlandt, co-founder and vice president of development for NBH. “The opioid epidemic has torn communities apart, and we recognize that it is not unique to large metropolitan areas. Our program focus will also expand to meet the growing methamphetamine needs in Minnesota. All people and families deserve the best care possible and to have their addiction treated like a chronic illness. This expansion is a way for us to help support an area that is asking for assistance. We are proud and honored to be that partner.”

NBH breaks down barriers to success with a full spectrum of support and a plan that is supportive and tailored to each individual. Offerings include a high-intensity 90-day medicated-assisted treatment residential program, intensive outpatient services, mental health services, medical services, non-emergency transportation services, and sober living. In 2020, NBH is preparing to implement a new service called Withdrawal Management, which will provide short-term medical services to those intoxicated or experiencing withdrawals.

This comprehensive approach to treatment meets an urgent and unmet need that is acutely felt in many communities, including Fergus Falls. “Today, people are more likely to die from a drug overdose than a car accident. Yet, throughout Minnesota, there is a shortage of Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors,” said Deb Sjostrom of Otter Tail County Human Services. “We’re excited to have NBH in Otter Tail County and look forward to partnering with them to address the significant mental health and chemical dependence needs of our community.”

Otter Tail County Commissioner Lee Rogness recognized the efforts of the Otter Tail County Community Development Agency in making this partnership possible, and said, “In addition to 40-50 new jobs for our region, NBH will provide critical access to mental health and chemical dependency treatment for our residents.”
