Bethany on the Lake has received a Gold Honor Roll designation from the Minnesota Antibiotic Stewardship, a division of the MN Department of Health, for its commitment to antibiotic stewardship. Gold Level members are recognized for looking beyond their facility to practice antibiotic stewardship in a formal collaborative way.
Bethany has also met the Silver and Bronze standards: Silver—have taken two actions with staff, families and the public, Bronze—have an antibiotic stewardship policy, antibiotic use protocols, leadership commitment, antibiotic stewardship team members and a description of yearly staff education.
"Our overall goal at Bethany On The Lake is to lower the amount of antibiotic use, and this recognition shows we have been successful in doing that," said Deb Buker, RN and Director of Nursing at Bethany on the Lake. Buker has been leading the campaign in partnership with Jessica Kelly, RN and Infection Preventionist, and Dr. Anthony Lussenhop, Medical Director.
Efforts from the Bethany Campus included contacting and educating area prescribing physicians and emergency department staff in meeting criteria prior to prescribing an antibiotic and also implementing an antibiotic time out before discharge. An antibiotic time out requires a physician to review proper dosage and length of prescription administration. Families and residents have also received education on the importance and process of reducing antibiotic use.
The program is designed to encourage commitment to antibiotic stewardship from the highest levels of administration to prescribers and caregivers, to foster site-to-site engagement to compare data and ideas, and to incentivize antibiotic stewardship program improvement in individual sites and statewide through mentorship, collaboration, and a focus on transitions of care.
