(Sauk Centre, MN) -- A domestic situation in Sauk Centre led to a lengthy standoff that lasted several hours and the arrest of a 27-year-old man. Sauk Centre Police say a woman called the department to report an assault early Sunday morning on the 600 block of Pine Street South. The man, Timothy Ryan Kellen, was also reportedly making threatening statements.
After initial negotiations with police a 9-year-old child was released from the residence around noon. Further investigation revealed Kellen shot at SWAT officers, who were approaching the residence inside an armored vehicle. Investigators determined the shot hit the armored vehicle in the area of the driver’s side door. The armored vehicle was occupied by multiple SWAT officers when it was fired upon. The complaint says he fired a shot that hit the SWAT vehicle but told investigators it went off unintentionally. Kellen also said he was drunk at the time. Eventually, Kellen surrendered to officers just before 2:30 Sunday afternoon. Neither the woman or child were injured during the incident.
During the standoff, police advised the public to stay away. Kellen was booked into Stearns County Jail and faces two counts of domestic assault, five counts of first-degree assault and use of deadly force against a police officer.
Sauk Centre Police were assisted by the Stearns County Sheriff's Office, the Minnesota State Patrol, St. Cloud and Stearns County SWAT teams, Melrose and Belgrade Police departments, the Minnesota DNR, along with Sauk Centre Fire and Ambulance.
