ATV Crash near Lake Irene

(Miltona Township) On Thursday afternoon around 4:45pm the Douglas County LEC received a 9-1-1 report of a possible missing person that had been operating an ATV in the area of Lake Irene and County Road 36 NE. The family members then advised that they located the 4 year old girl who had been a passenger on the ATV. A short time later the family members reported that they had located the overturned ATV and the driver, 32 year old Riley Marie Sowada of Moorhead, was still trapped underneath.

The Miltona First Responders, Parkers Prairie Ambulance, North Ambulance, Life Link III helicopter, and Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene. Family members were able to move the ATV and free Sowada. Sowada was examined and treated on scene by ambulance personnel. She was later transported to Alomere Health Hospital by Parkers Prairie Ambulance for further treatment. Her injuries were not life threatening. The young female passenger was uninjured.

Deputies determined that the crash/rollover occurred as Sowada was operating the ATV very close the shoulder of NW Irene Road NE and the ATV rolled into the ditch. Sowada stated that as the ATV rolled over, the 4 year passenger was ejected from the ATV.  Authorities say neither rider was wearing a helmet.
