(Alexandria, MN) – The City of Alexandria is pleased to announce that Governor Tim Walz has recommended the expansion of the Runestone Community Center (RCC) be included as part of the Local Jobs and Projects Plan. Commonly referred to as the bonding bill, the Local Jobs and Project Plan proposes investments in public infrastructure throughout the state. The City of Alexandria is pleased the Governor supports the expansion, which will add a third floor on the southwest side of the facility that could be used for ice and dry floor events. Mayor Sara Carlson “We are excited to see the support from Governor Walz for our Community. This is an important and encouraging step for us, as a city, to be part of the Governor’s recommendations. We also would like to thank Representatives Mary Franson and Paul Anderson and Senators Bill Ingebrigtsen and Torrey Westrom for their past and continued support of this proposal.”

The final bonding bill will likely be considered by the Legislature in May 2020. The City will continue to work with the Governor and Legislators to see that the project be included in the final bill.  Early estimates have the Democratic proposal for this year's bonding bill coming in at more than $3 million, while the Republican plan would likely come in closer to $1.5 million.  The final number will be a big factor in the success of the RCC being included in bonding for 2020.

The RCC has served as a gathering place for West Central Minnesota since its opening in 1978, drawing athletes and event attendees from across the state. The original facility was constructed with one floor area that contains fixed and removable seating accommodating 1,600 spectators. A second floor was added 1994. Both floors are currently used for ice and dry floor events.
