A look over downtown Alexandria, MN from 2nd to 10th Avenue shows that plenty of water is not far away.  The north side of Broadway Street is met by Lake Agnes.  Each side of Alexandria has grown substantially, but the city limits have also seen more than 20% growth in the past 10 years.

In its sixth annual study, New York financial technology company SmartAsset determined the best cities to retire in Minnesota by analyzing their tax friendliness, availability of medical care and social opportunities for seniors. 

Alexandria came out on top, edging out Grand Rapids (#2), Detroit Lakes (#3), Fergus Falls (#4) and Montevideo (#5).   Alexandria scored a 43.08 on SmartAsset's "Best Places to Retire Index.  The index takes into account taxes, the number of Doctor's Offices, Recreation Centers, Retirement Center and percentage of seniors.
