(Alexandria, MN)  At Monday’s meeting of the Alexandria School Board, members unanimously approved a graduation plan for three separate events that will honor graduates on the original planned date of May 29, 2020.

Virtual Graduation Ceremony

On the originally scheduled graduation date of Friday, May 29, Alexandria Area High School (AAHS) will host a virtual graduation event starting at 3:30 p.m. This video ceremony will recreate many elements of our typical graduation ceremony, including speeches, student performances, visual and audio recognition of each individual graduate. The ceremony will be aired online, on social media, and broadcast on cable TV public access.

Optional Photo Opportunity at AAHS

Graduates and their immediate family will sign-up for a time to come to AAHS starting at 4:45 p.m. The school will provide a “graduation walk experience” in which each student, dressed in their caps and gowns, will have the opportunity to walk across a stage and receive their diploma from school board members and administration. This event will be outside in front of the main entrance and will be live streamed.

Escorted Graduation Procession

A “stay-in-your-car” procession through Alexandria to celebrate seniors while following proper social distancing requirements will complete the evening. The line-up for the procession will begin at 7:00 p.m. at a designated location. The escorted procession will start at 7:30 p.m. and will follow a designated route throughout town.

Informal Gathering - TBD

When social distancing guidelines are lifted to allow for large gatherings, Alexandria Area High School will host an informal outdoor gathering for the Class of 2020 seniors and parents. The gathering will include grilled food, opportunities for students to sign yearbooks and take pictures together.

“As the Class of 2020 prepares to celebrate the accomplishment of this milestone we want to ensure these students receive the recognition they have earned in as safe an environment as possible,” stated Superintendent Julie Critz.
