The beauty of Douglas County parks is surpassed only by the number of activities available during the winter months. “There’s plenty of room for everyone,” says Parks Superintendent Brad Bonk. “Sharpen your skates, wax up the cross-country skis and brush off the sleds. We are looking forward to a great winter.”
Lake Brophy County Park If you like a view with your winter activities, the new Lake Brophy County Park is the place to visit. It offers a beautiful view of Lake Brophy. Take in the sights while you’re sledding down an exhilarating hill! You can also enjoy view while hiking or snowshoeing the trails nearby. The park also has fire rings with wood so everyone can stay warm, including parents watching their kids skate on the ice oval. A porta potty will be available for bathroom needs.
Location: Lake Brophy Park is approximately 5 miles west of Alexandria. Take County Road 82 west to County Road 114, which is Brophy Landing Road, and go about 1 1/2 miles north. The winter activities parking lot is the second entrance on the right.
Kensington Rune Stone Park has some of the most beautiful cross-country ski trails in the state. Glide on groomed trails through the woods or near Star Lake. Maps are available here. This park also has groomed fat tire bike trails, hiking and an amazing hill for the young and old to sled down. Perhaps best of all, it has a beautiful visitor center which is open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week to warm up, have a snack and use the bathroom.
Location: Kensington Rune Stone Park is in Solem Township of Douglas County. From Alexandria, go west on Highway 27 approximately 14 miles to County Highway 103. Go 1 1\2 miles south on Highway 103 to the park entrance road. All road surfaces to and inside Kensington Rune Stone Park are paved.
Spruce Hill Park: This park offers a cross country ski trail that includes a perfectly groomed quaint bridge. See the map here. There are also trails to hike and snowshoe. An outhouse and small warming shelter are available.
Location: Spruce Hill Park is in Spruce Hill Township of Douglas County. From Alexandria, go north on Highway 29 approximately 9 miles to County Highway 5. Go 5 miles east on Highway 5 to Spruce Hill Park Road, which is County Road 105. Go north 3\4 mile on a gravel road to the park entrance road. All other road surfaces to Spruce Hill Park are paved
Chippewa Park: Families will love this park during the winter. There’s a sledding hill, cross country skiing, hiking and snowshoeing in a more open setting than Kensington Rune Stone or Spruce Hill Parks. Bundle up and go potty before you get there. No bathrooms or warming shelter is yet available.
Location: Chippewa Park is in Brandon Township of Douglas County. From Brandon, go north on County Highway 7 approximately 3 miles to County Road 108. Go west on 108 approximately 1 mile to the park entrance.
