(Sauk Rapids, MN) Thursday night AAHS Theatre took their one act play to the MSHSL section 8AA final at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School. AAHS won first place with their play Yerma, by Frederico Garcia Lorca. Little Falls High School took second place, with Sauk Rapids-Rice taking third.

Yerma is the story of a young woman who is desperate to have a child while her husband desires peace and calm in their lives together. Her measures turn more desperate as she becomes alienated from her community, leading her to take surprising action. This version of the script was translated from Spanish by AAHS junior Nick Nelson. Nelson also wrote vocal music to underscore the play.

The title character is played by senior Isabella Greathouse. Also in the cast are senior Georgia Snider as Maria/Dolores, Nick Nelson as Victor, junior Regan Peterson as Yerma's Husband, junior Aubrey Kosters as Dolores's Daughter, freshman Parker Zwach as First Girl, and sophomore Jeryn Drewes as Old Woman. Other cast members include juniors Hayden Peterson and Noah Capouch, senior Joslyn Swenson, and freshman Tai Auran. Senior Matt Adolphsen is the stage manager. Other MSHSL crew members include seniors Caitlin Erickson, Sidney Trousil, Bianca Wegner, Hannah Ward, and Jordan Rymer, as well as junior crew members Ryla Johnson, Grace Schmidt, and Aubrey Minnerath. Non-MSHSL crew includes Jacob Tiegen, Ben Borden, Conner Arndt, Grace Faust, and Tayler Huber. Jessica Chipman is the director and costume designer. Jay Chipman is the set designer.

Yerma will be presented at the MSHSL State One Act Play Festival on Friday, February 7 at 2:15pm in the O'Shaughnessy Auditorium on St. Catherine University campus in St. Paul. This will mark AAHS'S sixth consecutive section win and advancement to the state festival. AAHS was awarded the judges' highest ranking at state, the "star" award, in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
