California Republicans needed a heroic turnout in Tuesday's recall election to have any chance of ousting Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, but preliminary vote tallies, Friday Sept. 17, 2021, show overall turnout in the state was around 55%, far below the 80% that voted in the 2020 presidential contest.
