PAUL, Minn. – The death of a St. Paul woman in a pedestrian crash last week is a reminder that as the days get shorter and the nights longer, motorists and pedestrians should watch out for one another. The fall months are the deadliest months for pedestrians, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other related life-threatening diseases take away people’s ability to walk, move, smile, talk and even breathe.

Foli Ole Festival Moves Downtown

(Alexandria, MN) For nine years the Foli Ole Festival was held at a local nursery (Anderson Florist & Greenhouse), but this year it was moved to downtown Alexandria.  From apple-on-a-string to bouncy houses to face painting to puck shooting, soccer skills, bicycle obstacle courses and on and on, there was plenty to do for the families and kids who showed up.  The event ran from 10:00am to 3:00pm with the AAHS Homecoming parade taking place right in the middle.  With all of the activity on 6th Avenue for kids, coupled with the sidewalk sales and the scavenger hunt from downtown businesses, it was a happening place to be.  Thousands of people were in downtown throughout the day.  As part of the family fall festival, Foli Ole organizers asked people to bring non-perishable food items and/or gently used winter coats, or monetary donations to give to United Way.  United Way's Kris Chisholm says the giving far exceeded expectations.

Alexandria Homecoming Parade Draws Thousands

(Alexandria, MN) A beautiful, windy Saturday afternoon in Alexandria and a couple dozen Homecoming floats equaled a reason to get out.  Thousands of people lined Broadway Street for the AAHS Homecoming Parade.  It was the first Homecoming Parade down the revitalized downtown and the Foli Ole Fall Festival moved downtown.  It made for a fun environment to be a part of.

Chili Cook-Off Gets Another Warm Reception from Community

(Alexandria, MN) For 18 years United Way of Pope and Douglas Counties has challenged the community to make some chili and help them make a difference.  The Chili Cook-Off and Silent Auction was held at the Broadway Ballroom on Tuesday over the lunch hour.  Hundreds of people filtered into the ballroom throughout the event.  For six bucks people were able to sample 29 different chilis.  As part of the "board games" theme, exhibitors decorated their booths (and themselves) as their favorite board game.

Minor Bus Accident Wednesday

Earlier Wednesday, school district bus #1 was involved in a minor bus/vehicle accident at Hwy 29 South and South Maple Lake Rd SE. The incident occurred at approximately 7:10 a.m.  There were no injuries as a result of the accident.

Alexandria Man Killed While Riding Bicycle on I-94 Identified

(Minneapolis, MN) -- The man killed while riding his bicycle on I-94 yesterday (Sunday) morning has been identified. Minnesota State Patrol says 21-year-old Jacob Kato of Alexandria died when he was hit by a car on I-94 southbound near West Broadway in Minneapolis. The State Patrol says Kato was traveling in the right traffic lane of I-94 around 3:00a.m. Sunday when he was hit.  The driver and passenger in the Nissan A2S that ran into Kato were not injured.  Troopers say the incident remains under investigation but alcohol does appear to be a factor in the crash.

Big Ole Fundraising Finished

Due to the generosity of businesses and individuals and the matching funds of the Alexandria Area Community Foundation, the fund raising effort was faster than expected. Curb is in place - Hwy 29 South

(Alexandria MN) -- Crews could begin paving Hwy 29 and the new Co Rd 28 alignment as soon as the end of next week.  During the first portion of the week, you'll notice final grading work to prepare the new road bed for pavement. Truck traffic to and from Central Specialties on Co Rd 87 will increase again once paving starts.

Three Car Accident on Broadway Leaves Several Injured

(Alexandria, MN)  Around 11:30 Tuesday morning three vehicles were involved in an accident at the intersection of 10th Avenue and Broadway Street (State Hwy 29).  Police say all three vehicles collided in the intersection and four of the six people involved were treated for minor injuries.  Authorities are having a difficult time piecing the exact details of the accident together, but their preliminary report indicates a Chevy Surburban driven by 76-year old James Johnson of Barrett was heading north on Broadway.  At the same time a Subaru driven by 74 year old Raymond Heidelberger of Villard heading eastbound on 10th Avenue attempted to turn north and a Kia driven by a 74 year old Theodore Kirst of Brandon was westbound on 10th and attempted to turn south.  Each vehicle contained a husband and his wife.  The reports says both the Heidelbergers and the Kirsts were transported by ambulance.  The driver and passenger in the Suburban did not require medical attention.

Traffic Stop Turns to Traffic Chase

(Alexandria, MN) On Monday the Alexandria Police Department attempted a traffic stop on North Nokomis Street for a traffic violation. Police say the suspect, 60 year old Mark Lloyd Hoium, attempted to elude officers and a chase ensued.  Top speeds did not go more than 50 miles per hour. Hoium continued to flee eastbound on 3rd Avenue East eventually pulling into an apartment complex on McKay Avenue. A foot pursuit then ensued. The suspect was apprehended on the second floor of the apartment complex located on the 400 block of McKay.  He will be held in custody for fleeing a police officer and other subsequent traffic charges. There were no injuries in the incident.

Roported Domestic Situation Near Kensington Turns into Search for Suspect

(Kensington, MN)  On Friday, August 21, 2015, just after 3:00pm the Douglas County Law Enforcement Center received a 9-1-1 report of a domestic situation at 8150 Dairy Drive SW in rural Kensington, MN. The complainant reported the domestic dispute had been physical and involved the use of a weapon, but that the male subject had since left the scene.

SUV Camper Accident

(Carlos, MN) -- Friday, the Douglas County Sheriffs office responded to a two vehicle accident on Hwy 29 north at County Road 13.   Conner Bermel, age 18, of Albertville was towing a camper behind a Chevy Suburban.  As Bermel slowed to make a left hand turn at the Carlos State Park turn off, Rick Jones, age 66, of Alexandria struck the vehicle from behind. Significant damage to the camper was reported as the Ford Explorer driven by Jones pushed into and entered the camper.
