Vikingland Band Festival adds “Minnesota Drum Corps Premiere”
Posted: April 05, 2016

The exciting sounds of drum and bugle corps will join the beat of marching bands in Alexandria this summer when the 2016 Vikingland Band Festival expands to a two-day event. A Saturday night field show exhibition will join the annual Sunday parade the weekend of June 25 and 26. The “Minnesota Drum Corps Premiere” will be held at the Alexandria Area H.S. football field at 6:30 PM on Saturday, June 25. A total of seven marching groups will perform, including all three of Minnesota’s all-age drum & bugle corps which will make their season debut by presenting their 2016 productions for the first time. The lineup for the field event includes Minnesota Brass (St. Paul, MN), Govenaires (St. Peter, MN), Chops, Inc. (Minneapolis, MN), Calgary Stampede Showband (Calgary, AB), Calgary Stetson Show Band (Calgary, AB), Calgary Round-Up Band Calgary, AB), plus a special kickoff appearance by local host Alexandria Marching Band. “Alexandria is known to have the biggest marching music weekend in the state, and 2016 will be the biggest and best in more than a decade,” according to committee chair Greg DeGier. “The Saturday field show will feature 700 performers, and the Sunday parade will see more than 2,000 musicians marching down Broadway.” In addition to musical excitement, the expanded Festival promises to provide a financial boost to the community, according to Festival co-founder Ken Martinson. “Eleven marching groups are planning to stay overnight in the Alexandria area on the Festival weekend,” Martinson said. “The economic impact this brings cannot be overlooked. Area hotels will be completely full on the busy weekend, and because we typically house the marching performers in gymnasiums, the Festival essentially expands the lodging capacity of the community by 1,000 beds.” Tickets for the Minnesota Drum Corps Premiere will go on sale Monday, April 25. Advance prices range from $6 to $9, with tickets $3 higher on the day of the show. Tickets may be ordered online at VikinglandBandFestival.com or purchased in person at Martinson Insurance, 518 Hawthorne Street in Alexandria.
