(Alexandria, MN) It is official. An ALDI Grocery Store will be moving into Alexandria in the near future. Alexandria City Building Inspector Lynn Timm says the company has submitted a building permit application. The plans call for a 17,018 square foot store on land located between 50th Avenue East and Interstate 94 in Alexandria. The lot is directly between Culver's and Fleet Farm. The project manager on the application estimates the cost of the project to be $800,000. Daniel Hernandez with Weber Shandwick says that the ALDI location is slated to open already this fall.
ALDI features certain ALDI-specific brands. A unique characteristic of ALDI stores in the cart system. Customers rent carts from ALDI for a quarter. Once you've returned your cart back in the store, you get your quarter back. They say the system saves customers money because the store does not need to hire someone to monitor and retrieve carts from the parking lot and they pass that savings on to you.
ALDI currently operates nearly 1300 stores in 32 states.
